Vodafone, Safaricom Wins Ethiopia license, Beat MTN

TechInPacific – Vodafone and Safaricom’s bid for licensing has been accepted, making the two the country’s first private mobile operator, while MTN entry has been rejected.

The successfully awarded consortium to the companies pledged to spend $8 billion on the operation for the next 10 years.

According to the Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) director-general Balcha Reba, the winning bidders had committed to create new jobs, support the economy through the introduction of new and efficient services.”

It’s reported by FT that the winning bid came close at $850 million, meanwhile, MTN wasn’t considered with its $600 million sums.
