Biochar Industrial Secures $1.5 Million Pre-Seed Funding to Scale Industrial Carbon Removal in Africa

African climate technology company Biochar Industrial has raised $1.5 million in pre-seed funding to accelerate the expansion of its industrial carbon removal operations and strengthen the development of biochar-based climate solutions across the continent.

The investment will support the company’s efforts to scale its technology, build operational capacity, and advance projects focused on removing carbon from the atmosphere through the production of biochar.

Biochar is a carbon-rich material created by heating organic biomass, such as agricultural and forestry waste, in a controlled process known as pyrolysis. Unlike ordinary biomass that decomposes and releases carbon back into the atmosphere, biochar can store carbon for long periods when applied to soil or used in other applications.

Biochar Industrial is focused on developing industrial-scale systems that transform waste materials into a valuable climate asset. The company’s approach addresses two major challenges facing many African economies: managing large volumes of agricultural waste and creating scalable solutions for carbon reduction.

The funding comes at a time when interest in carbon removal technologies is increasing globally, as businesses and governments explore ways to meet climate targets and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Africa’s significant agricultural resources and availability of biomass waste provide opportunities for companies working in the carbon removal sector.

Beyond carbon storage, biochar production can also create economic opportunities through new value chains involving farmers, waste suppliers, technology providers, and local communities. However, scaling the industry requires investment in infrastructure, reliable supply chains, and systems to measure and verify carbon removal outcomes.

Biochar Industrial’s latest funding represents growing investor interest in African climate-tech companies developing solutions with both environmental and commercial potential. The company joins a rising group of startups working to position Africa as a participant in the global carbon removal market while addressing local sustainability challenges.

The investment will help Biochar Industrial move toward larger-scale deployment as it works to expand its role in Africa’s emerging carbon economy.
