TechInAfrica – As part of its commitment to supporting young African innovators, Siemens has extended its Eskom Expo partnerships to schools in five African countries—Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia—by refurbishing and restocking Sekondi College computer labs, which is part of its localization program.

The Eskom Expo for young scientists at Birchwood Conference Center in Johannesburg, South Africa is a Siemens-sponsored event attended by hundreds of enthusiastic young scientists and innovators across Africa wanting to showcase their science projects.

The event will give an opportunity to a student to join the three-and-a-half-year of Siemens Technical Academy program in Berlin alongside other former expo winners. The winning student will also be given a guaranteed job at Siemens after completing the program.

Furthermore, as part of its commitment to supporting the development of young African innovators, Siemens has continued to partner with various schools in different African countries.

Two students and an educator from Sekondi College is sponsored by Siemens to participate in the Expo in Johannesburg. All the expenses including visa applications, flights, and transfers to the local accommodation were all fully funded by Siemens. In additions, additional two students and an educator from other schools in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Tanzania have also the same sponsorship and opportunity.

Edmund Acheampong, the Country Manager for Siemens Ghana said, “The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is well-positioned to develop young, curious minds and it is with great pleasure that students from Sekondi College and other African regions have an opportunity to participate and represent their countries and their schools at the prestigious event.”

The sponsorship to Sekondi College in Ghana is also part of Siemens’ goal to promote Science Technology Engineering Mathematics Innovation (STEMI), gaining students’ interest in technology and innovation. Siemens refurbishes and restocks the school’s computer lab with 45 state of the art computers and accessories which is part of the MoU between the company and Secondi College signed in September 2017.

“Our continent can only prosper if we empower and develop our young engineers and those who can make a change in Africa, for Africa. This is a unique opportunity promoting both international and multicultural exposure within Siemens while advancing the skills Siemens would require in the future,” Acheampong concluded.
