Share

TikTok has launched the second phase of its #SaferTogether online safety programme, collaborating with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Data Science Nigeria. The initiative aims to create a comprehensive digital safety network across Nigerian communities.

First introduced in 2022, the programme represents a significant step towards digital literacy and online protection. The initial phase successfully reached 537 teachers and 1,037 parents across major cities including Abuja, Lagos, and Kano, focusing on digital safety features and mental health awareness.

The expanded second phase introduces NITDA as a strategic partner, broadening the programme’s scope and impact. This collaboration seeks to address critical digital challenges facing young people today. The initiative will cover crucial topics including misinformation, cyberbullying, digital citizenship, fake news, and data protection.

Workshops will engage diverse stakeholders, from civil society organizations to government representatives and community leaders. The programme will extend its reach to additional regions, specifically targeting Edo and Kaduna states.

Data Science Nigeria will play a pivotal role in developing content and curriculum for the initiative. Dr. Olubayo Adekanmbi, the organization’s founder, highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in creating a safer digital environment.

TikTok’s comprehensive approach includes multiple engagement strategies. Social media outreach, workshops, and strategic partnerships will form the core of the awareness campaign. The company’s Trust and Safety team will guide content development, ensuring robust and relevant educational materials.

The programme provides extensive resources for parents and guardians through TikTok’s Safety Centre and Guardian’s Guide. These platforms offer updated information and best practices for digital safety, empowering families to navigate online challenges effectively.

NITDA’s involvement aligns with broader goals of digital literacy and technological infrastructure development. The agency aims to support inclusive access to digital tools and enhance cybersecurity awareness across Nigerian communities.

Key focus areas include protecting young users from potential online risks while promoting positive digital engagement. The initiative emphasizes education over restriction, teaching critical skills for safe and responsible internet use.

TikTok’s commitment extends beyond platform-specific safety. The programme represents a holistic approach to digital wellness, recognizing the complex landscape of online interactions. By bringing together technology companies, government agencies, and community organizations, the #SaferTogether campaign creates a comprehensive support network.

As digital technologies continue to evolve, initiatives like these become increasingly crucial. The collaborative effort between TikTok, NITDA, and Data Science Nigeria demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing digital safety challenges.

The programme serves as a model for comprehensive digital literacy efforts, showcasing how strategic partnerships can create meaningful change in online safety education.
