Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced the closure of its operations in Nigeria, bringing an end to a 12-year presence in the country.

The company said its Nigerian operations would officially wind down on September 2, 2026, following a review of the business. Uber entered the Nigerian market in Lagos in 2014 and has since connected passengers with independent drivers through its ride-hailing platform.

In its announcement, Uber thanked customers who had used the platform for daily commutes, visits to family and friends, and other journeys over the years. The company also acknowledged that its withdrawal could disrupt the routines of users who depend on the service.

Uber said its customer support centre would remain available until September 23, 2026, to handle outstanding account-related questions and other enquiries from users.

The company’s years in Nigeria were not without challenges. Drivers had previously raised concerns over issues including fares, commission rates and working conditions, with protests reported in 2017, 2023 and 2025.

Uber’s departure marks the end of one of Nigeria’s longest-running international ride-hailing operations and could reshape competition within the country’s growing app-based transportation market.
