MTN Partners with SANTACO to Digitize South Africa’s Taxi Industry and Empower SMEs

MTN South Africa has announced a strategic partnership with the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) aimed at modernizing the country’s transport infrastructure. The initiative will start in Gauteng—South Africa’s economic hub, home to more than 35,000 of the nation’s nearly 190,000 taxis—and will leverage digital innovation to improve safety, digitize operations, and support small and medium-sized enterprises as well as marginalized communities.

At the launch, MTN’s General Manager for SME, Nkosi Kumalo, underscored the scale and potential of the collaboration:

“Today, we are taking concrete steps to finalize and officially launch the strategic partnerships we have with SANTACO. Our goal is to harness the power of numbers to build a sustainable business that can support the small businesses operating within the industry. By using our platforms—including fintech and enterprise business solutions such as IoT—we are committed to making this a reality.”

– Nkosi Kumalo, General Manager for SME, MTN

Victor Dlamini, MTN’s Regional GM for Gauteng, emphasized SANTACO’s central role in the transport ecosystem:

“SANTACO is a major player in the taxi industry. They transport one of our largest customer segments—the commuters who use our products daily. This partnership will enable the industry to communicate more effectively, embrace innovation, and advance digitalization. Most importantly, it will bring benefits to operators, drivers, and SMEs, fostering economic inclusion.”

– Victor Dlamini, Regional GM, Gauteng

Through this collaboration, MTN and SANTACO seek to transform the taxi industry by boosting safety, digitizing operations, and empowering small businesses and marginalized communities across South Africa.
