Samsung Initiates E-Waste Collection Program in Kenya

Share

In response to the mounting issue of global electronic waste (e-waste), Samsung Electronics East Africa has launched an e-waste collection program in partnership with Nairobi-based retailer, Housewife’s Paradise. The initiative, marking the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, aims to tackle e-waste through recycling and contributes to broader environmental conservation efforts.

The collaboration will see Housewife’s Paradise collecting Samsung-branded e-waste from customers at their convenience, arranging pick-ups using the designated mobile number 0110730305. Once collected, the waste will be transported to the WEEE Center, Samsung’s official recycling partner in Kenya, where it will be disposed of according to globally recognised standards.

The 2020 Global E-Waste Monitor reports that the world produces approximately 53.6 million metric tonnes of e-waste annually, which could escalate to 120 million tonnes by 2050 if left unchecked. Tragically, only 17.4% of e-waste is currently managed correctly. In Kenya alone, the production of electronic waste has risen sharply, from 3,000 metric tonnes in 2012 to 51,000 metric tonnes annually by 2021.

Samsung and Housewife’s Paradise are committed to promoting proper e-waste disposal, believing that the right management of these materials can protect our environment for future generations.
