Cape Town’s Tennsa becomes Oakvale Invest’s first-ever portfolio bet, raising about $61,000

South African startup Tennsa has closed a raise of just over ZAR1 million (roughly $61,000) from Oakvale Invest, making it the first company to receive backing from the newly active, Africa-focused pre-seed fund.

The Cape Town-based company builds AI software aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. Its flagship product, Tennsa OS, plugs into the various tools a business already uses, sales platforms, inventory systems, invoicing software, communications channels, and pulls that data together into one place. From there, it monitors for issues that need attention and surfaces information meant to help owners make faster operating decisions. Founder Rivar Maharaj has framed the mission simply: use AI to cut down the routine administrative load that eats into a small business owner’s time.

Oakvale Invest’s own niche is fairly specific. It backs African AI startups exclusively at the pre-seed stage, and specifically targets founders between 18 and 25 years old. Beyond capital, the fund positions itself as a hands-on partner on things like product focus, go-to-market strategy, governance, and follow-on fundraising. Tennsa is its first publicly disclosed deal.

The investment lands in a part of the AI market that’s been gaining attention: tools built for back-office business operations rather than consumer-facing chatbots. For most small businesses, financial, inventory, customer, and payment data tends to live in disconnected systems. Tennsa is essentially betting that a connective software layer sitting on top of those tools can flag problems, cash flow issues, customer friction, before they cause real damage.
