Young Ghanaians Invent a Solution to Address Waste Management Issue in Accra

TechInAfrica – Ghana is facing waste management issue, especially in its capital and biggest city, Accra which is occupied by four million residents. The fast-growing city generates around 3,000 metric tons of waste per day, leaving the country overwhelmed.

Waste collection in Ghana is outsourced partially to private contractors by the government. Later, full autonomy was granted to the private companies to charge their customers for waste collected while being regulated by the government. However, the private waste companies provide manual cash system which is found inefficient.

A young Ghanaian entrepreneur by the name Eyram Amedzor has done resource to the problem regarding waste management companies in the country. According to him, there’s the need to change how to operate a waste management company in terms of the payment system and the monitoring.

Teaming up with his other friends: Emmanuel Oduro and Kewin Gawo, Amedzor offers a solution to the waste management issue facing Accra. He established a waste management company called Jumeni in June 2019.

Jumeni provides a cloud-based field service management solution via web and mobile which aims at addressing waste management issue in Ghana. It brings close monitoring and more visibility into field operations so that they can identify problems and improve productivity.

Learning from inefficiency by most waste companies, Jumeni offers faster and convenient payment system through multiple channels such as POS, USSD, and web payments.

“This invariably paves way for better customer management, since customers have access to additional perks such as receiving event-based notifications pertaining to delivery of service as well as the much-needed feedback loop system,” Amedzor said.

In January this year, Jumeni launched a limited beta phase of its flagship product for the waste management industry. Ever since two waste management companies have used the product actively. Furthermore, within the three months of piloting, Jumeni has processed more than $5,000 of transactions from the two companies. The official launch of the product was on April 24 and Jumeni will deploy it for several waste management companies.
