Aga Khan University And MEDITECH Partnership For EHR Installation

Share

TechInAfrica – In Nairobi, Kenya, an expansion of MEDITECH’s program has led to the deployment of Expanse, a result of MEDITECH and Aga Khan University (AKU) partnership, in AGU’s academic medical center and clinics. Expanse is a web-based Enterprise Health Record (EHR), which stems from AKU’s effort on providing the best healthcare services to the developing world millions of people. A subsequent deployment will run in Karachi, Pakistan.

“Howard Messing, the CEO of MEDITECH, said, “This is one of my proudest days at MEDITECH. It is truly an honor to partner with Aga Khan University, and to align ourselves with their commitment to providing quality healthcare to underserved populations, as well as to their deeper mission of advancing education, culture, and overall quality of life for their communities.”

The President of AKU, Firoz Rasul, said, “The benefits of an integrated EHR will be particularly significant in the countries we serve. The access to an abundance of data (AKU serves 2.2 million patients annually) will enable us to ask better questions and find better solutions to specific diseases and chronic issues in all the communities we serve. The information gained will be of value not only within our own healthcare system but also to the population of the region as a whole — and through our research, will inform health outcomes in related populations across the globe.”

AKU has been conducting world-class research on endemic and emerging health issues in the developing world by working with the international team across the globe, bringing the aim to create efficient and appropriate health systems that improve the current health system. More than 60 years have passed since AKU’s approach to the health issue considered a broad, long-range, and research-based ethics on addressing what the poor communities have been struggling with.

“This is such an exciting opportunity and challenge for us,” said Charlotte Jackson, the CEO of MEDITECH International, the international extension of MEDITECH. “We’ve seen first-hand what an integrated EHR can do in the developing world. We know what we achieved in Botswana, using technology to deliver population health concepts in a remote, underserved area. We can’t wait to start changing lives across the countries that Aga Khan serves.”

The installation of the EHR will be a joint effort between MEDITECH and MEDITECH South Africa.
