Meta, the company that owns Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, is shutting down its East African content moderation hub, which will affect about 200 employees, as it moves away from policing harmful content.
Sama, a third-party contractor for Meta, has said that it will only work on data labeling and computer vision data annotation, which includes putting animations in augmented reality filters like bunny ears in the right place. This led to the decision.
The company, which has more than 15,000 content moderators working for it worldwide, has said that it has found a new partner and that its moderation abilities will stay the same.
This news comes two months after Meta said it would cut its global headcount by 13%, or about 11,000 jobs because the company is losing money, digital advertising is going down, and rivals like TikTok are powerful.
