TechInAfrica – In the modern days, we access the internet every day for whatever the purpose is. In fact, it’s something that people nowadays cannot live without, especially those who live in big cities with a high-speed internet connection. Having several accounts of social media are even very common things amongst us as different social media offer different user experience.

Speaking about social media accounts or other accounts related to the internet world, they usually require us to provide an email address and password to make ones. It’s part of the security procedure to protect us from cyber attacks that can lead to big data loss and privacy violation. It’s advised that we provide a different and complicated password for every account. However, in reality, many people don’t do what they should—using a repeated password for multiple channels and keep it simple and easy to memorize.

According to a survey conducted by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), many British Internet users had no idea what’s the best ways to protect themselves from cybercrime. Only around 15% of the respondents understood how to protect themselves online while less than half of respondents said of using a strong, separate password for their primary email account.

The survey findings were revealed during the NCSC’s CyberUK 2019 Conference in Glasgow, Scotland. According to the survey, the most used passwords were ‘123456’, ‘12345678’, ‘qwerty’, ‘password’, and ‘1111111’

Ian Levy, NSCS’ Technical Director stated: “We understand that cybersecurity can feel daunting to a lot of people, but the National Cyber Security Centre has published lots of easily applicable advice to make you much less vulnerable.

He then added, “Password re-use is a major risk that can be avoided — nobody should protect sensitive data with something that can be guessed, like their first name, local football team or favorite band.”

These weak passwords are risky to get attacked by cybercriminals. The most recommended passwords to use are the hard-to-guess ones but memorable words to the users. So, you should be creative and use the words that are memorable to you so that people will not be able to guess your password.
