Cape Town: Africa’s Leading Digital City

Share

TechInAfrica – Cape Town, a port city on South Africa’s southwest coast serving as the country’s legislative capital, has been fervently and substantially contributive towards building the Western Cape’s GDP. In response to this development of innovation and infrastructure, Cape Town has been renowned as Africa’s leading digital city. With nearly three-quarters of the GDP in the Western Cape, Cape Town is also home to several international businesses and companies that’re looking to set up trading in the region.

Investing an approximate of R1 billion towards infrastructure development, the international businesses that have set up their new homes also pitched in up to R5 billion in foreign direct investment into the city. Additionally, it is also reported that around 50% of emerging tech companies in South Africa are based in the Western Cape—most of them originating from Cape Town itself.

A fast-emerging tech hub is also a fast-emerging employment rate for both local and global companies. The tech scene of the region gains most of its employees and technical talents from Cape Town, while continuously investing towards the city’s telecommunications infrastructure to provide sustainability to its residents.

Connect Pilot Project—Cape Town’s attempt at tackling connectivity issues by enabling fibre-powered connection to around 1,000 commercial buildings in the central district—is projected to be completed in 2020 while at the same time accommodating a digitally savvy population.

During the past financial year, it is recorded that 4,764 jobs were created, and 2,109 people received an improvement in their respective skills and training. If the notion goes with minimal hindrances, it’s highly likely that Cape Town will reach an upgraded global competitiveness not just in the technology scene—but also in economy and human resources generally.
