Gebeya‘ is Amharic for a marketplace. The company connects startups and SMEs to talented professionals across Africa. This platform offers an intelligent matching algorithm that considers budget, language, location, and automated matching. Users can also access on-site or remote talent in graphic design, software development, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital marketing, and product development.

We earlier covered Gebeya’s February raise of $2 million in seed funding led by Partech Ventures, Orange Ventures, and Consonance Investment Managers. The funding helped the company adopt a scalable marketplace model.

Since its start, Gebeya has worked aggressively to highlight Africa’s competitiveness to the front of the global digital and technical landscape. North America makes up half of the world’s freelancer-gig economy, a sector evaluated at $1.5 trillion. Africa makes up only 1.4% of this market share.

The gig economy is based on digital platforms connecting freelances to customers who provide asset sharing or short-term services. The global pandemic seems to fueled more jobs outsourcing to online talent marketplaces which in turn are attracting many professionals looking to increase their earnings or work on a freelance basis full-time.
