TechInAfrica – The global delivery startup based in Barcelona, Glovo, has recently launched a micro fulfillment center, which is the first of its kind in Africa.

This center will give consumers access to order from Glovo market and their favorite supermarkets, such as Carrefour and Naivas, and retail brands like Bulkbox, Diageo, EABL, Reckitt, Heshba, Mesora, Wrigleys, Pernod Ricard, Kimberly Clark, and Farmers Choice, and other stores.

Delivering a keynote speech in the center launch in Nairobi, State Department of ICT & Innovation Principal Secretary (PS), Mr. Jerome Ochieng said,

“The delivery sector needs to build on its vast network for enhanced last-mile deliveries, latching on the momentum created by the Covid-19 pandemic. Keep innovation and developing new products and services that meet the ever-growing demand of a digitally engaged populace”

He praises the company’s effort by landing first in Africa’s micro fulfillment center in the continent, noting the ICT’s staff’s hard work on maintaining the digital space despite the looming cyber threats globally.

“COVID-19 impacted traditional brick-and-mortar retail. We believe that micro fulfillment centers represent an important part of the future of post-pandemic retail, and I think we will see a permanent shift to consumers buying groceries and other essential and convenience items from an app and website, rather than making such trips in person. ‘’ Oscar Pierre, CEO, and Co-founder of Glovo said during the launch.

He also thanked the government for the conducive business environment in the country, affirming that the business enjoys an adequate and reliable market for favorable returns.

As part of its Q-commerce division initiative or quick expansion, the center, available at AEA Plaza on Valley Road, also welcomes individuals and SMBs to sell their products on the platform.
