Airpay, a global financial technology company, has launched its digital financial services platform in Tanzania. This expansion aligns with the company’s goal of using technology to drive economic progress, as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding between India and Tanzania. After receiving approval from the Bank of Tanzania, Airpay can now offer its suite of payment services across the country.
In addition to payment solutions, Airpay aims to build digital and financial literacy in Tanzania. The company plans to open the Airpay Academy, a hybrid learning program focused on improving digital skills and financial knowledge at the grassroots level. By equipping more Tanzanians with critical skills, Airpay hopes to spur socioeconomic development nationwide.
The launch in Tanzania marks an important step in Airpay’s broader African expansion strategy. Airpay now has two new offices in Tanzania to support operations as it extends its services regionally. The company ultimately aims to reach twelve African countries and promote financial inclusion across the continent through its platform.
Founded by Kunal Jhunjhunwala, Airpay has already collaborated with over 200 financial institutions and 1,000 business partners worldwide. Its platform enables seamless financial transactions through channels like web, mobile, SMS, and more. With its vast network, Airpay can facilitate accessible financial services for individuals and businesses alike.
At the launch event in Zanzibar, Jhunjhunwala expressed Airpay’s vision to make Tanzania a digital leader. By empowering tech-savvy citizens, Airpay hopes to drive socioeconomic change at the local level, aligning with India’s DPI initiative. Airpay aims to collaborate with Tanzania’s government to realise this vision.
The event signified the importance of Airpay’s launch and was attended by dignitaries like Saada Mkuya, Tanzania’s Minister of State, and Binaya Pradhan, India’s High Commissioner. Also present were Airpay Tanzania Co-Founder Yasmin Chali, Tanzanian government officials, and economic agency heads.
