SACS Is the First and Fastest Connectivity to Link Africa and Americas

TechInAfrica — The South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) goes live and opens for commercial traffics. It is claimed to be the first and fastest to link Africa and the Americas with the lowest latency. Moreover, it will also provide a more direct routing for internet traffic in the Southern Hemisphere.

The data transfer has improved five times faster than the previous cable routings. It reduces latency from Fortaleza, Brazil to Luanda, Angola from 350ms to 63ms. Not only does it connect Luanda, but from Luanda, it can also connect to London and Miami with 128ms of latency. These hubs (London and Miami) put Angola as a strategic point to serve the transatlantic region with low latency as well as resilient connections.

SACS is an advanced connection that offers lower latency between Miami, USA and Cape Town, South Africa from 338ms to 163ms. In additions, SACS provides a high-quality service and improved latency with up to 60% over the current routing options. It helps to reduce data traffic cost between South America and Africa, resulting the end-users and customers are able to utilize it.

Speaking of the cable commercialization between South America and Africa, the CEO of Angola Cables, António Nunes says that it is not just about ‘a game-changer’. It aims for direct communications between the two continents that will bring advantages worldwide for internet service provider (ISPs), Cloud Service Provides (CSPs), and Over the Top Content Providers (OTTs) when using the connections.

Nunes comments on this SACS and its ability to provide direct connectivity between the continents. He states, “Our ambition is to transport South American and Asian data packets via our African hub using SACS, and together with Monet and the WACS, provide a more efficient direct connectivity option between North, Central, and South America onto Africa, Europe, and Asia. By developing and connecting ecosystems that allow for local IP traffic to be exchanged locally and regionally, the efficiency of networks that are serving the Southern Hemisphere can be vastly improved. As these developments progress they will have a considerable impact on the future growth and configuration of the global internet.”

The cable system allows the African internet service providers and users to have a direct and secure connectivity to Americas. The content service providers in Latin America will also get benefits with the SACS route option to reach markets in Europe and Africa without using the traditional and high volume—Northern Hemisphere internet traffic routings.

The Angola Cables-owned SACS is designed with 100Gbps coherent WDM technology with an end-to-end solution. It has four fibre pairs that offer a design capacity of a 40Tbit/s in total between Fortaleza, Brazil and Luanda, Angola.
